aalto chair remix
In this series of experimental chairs I explored different ways to support and transfer weight. Triangle and Zigzag chairs deal specifically with the potentials of mitered connections and ways to reinforce them. The last chair was inspired by Alvar Aalto’s bent wood chair and explores the potentials of wood lamination and digital fabrication. Along with the technical considerations, this series also emphasizes the expressive nature of the different woods used.
Materials: Red Oak, Sapele
Finish: Linseed Oil
Inspired by Alvar Aalto’s iconic bent wood chairs, this remix seeks to add a unique 21st century twist to the design. The de-lamination at the corners is expressive of the construction process while adding structural reinforcement. the curved joint of Sapele at the top of the de-lamination split is CNC milled to fit perfectly in the splice; a subtle nod to the use of digital technology in the fabrication process.
