Collaborative Design Build Workshop: NYC + Rio De Janeiro, New York + Brazil
Inspired by the informal nature of commerce typical of Brazilian cities, we designed a set of flexible carts which can be deployed for staging events at Studio-X Rio. Each cart was given a required program to fulfill: projection +DJ/AV equipment cart, exhibition cart, and a bar cart. In addition we were challenged to use only the recycled materials provided to us by a local building materials company in order to promote sustainable practices.
Project Leads: Brigette Borders (GSAPP-LABS), Raul A Smith (PUC-Rio), Nathan Carter (GSAPP-LABS)
Design Build Team: 10 participants from PUC-Rio + 10 from Columbia GSAPP
We spent two weeks brainstorming, prototyping, and designing the carts at the GSAPP Laboratory of Applied Building Science in New York. Here we were able to use a combination of traditional and digital building tools, and push out understanding of the materials we were given. By the end of two weeks we had the three carts detailed down to the shop drawings, and were ready to build. We then flew to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and spent two weeks building what we designed.
